What is NextSet?

Watch the clock less. Train more.

In strength training, rest matters: too short and your next set suffers – too long and your workout drags on. NextSet is an interval timer and workout log in one: for anyone who trains with fixed set and rest times at the gym or at home and wants to track progress without paper notes or spreadsheets.

Automatically on time

Sets and rest alternate on their own. NextSet counts your sets – no more staring at the clock.

Announcements in your ear

A voice tells you when the set ends and when to go again – even with your iPhone locked. Your music only gets quieter for a moment.

Progress that counts

The logbook takes over every workout from the timer. Personal records, charts and the muscle map show what you’ve achieved.

Private by design

No account, no developer server, no ads. Your data stays on your devices and in your iCloud.

Features

From your first set to your personal best.

Timer, announcements, logbook and insights work hand in hand – everything on this page is in the app.

Interval timer

Sets and rest, back to back – completely automatic.

Choose how long a set and a rest last, then start. NextSet switches between them automatically and counts your sets – or waits for you after every phase.

  • Set and rest durations from 5 seconds to 60 minutes, with presets like 1:30 or 3:00
  • Green for the set, blue for the rest – the ring shows the time left at a glance
  • Restart or skip a phase, pause and resume
  • Live heart rate from your Apple Watch right in the ring
NextSet timer during a set: green ring, countdown 0:27, set 3, heart rate 128 bpm, with the controls and the music player below.
NextSet timer during rest: blue ring with 1:48 left and the note “3 sets completed”.

Announcements & music

A voice tells you when to go again.

The announcement plays through your AirPods or the speaker – in the language, voice and speed you choose. Three ticks count down the last seconds, and your music only gets quieter for a moment.

  • Announcements even with your iPhone locked – with Apple Health connected, NextSet speaks itself; otherwise time-sensitive notifications take over
  • Your own announcement texts, volume and signal sounds
  • Control Apple Music right below the timer: title, artwork, play/pause, next and previous
  • Other apps like Spotify keep playing – control them with your headphones or Control Center
NextSet timer during rest: blue ring with 1:48 left and the note “3 sets completed”.

“Set completed. Time to rest!”

“Rest is over. Let's go!”

Lock Screen & Dynamic Island

The countdown keeps running – even without the app.

As a Live Activity, NextSet shows the time left, your exercise, the total time and your heart rate on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. Pause, finish the set or skip right there – or just ask Siri.

  • “Next: Rest 3:00” – you always see what comes next
  • Buttons for pause and “Set Done” right on the Lock Screen
  • Siri and Shortcuts: start, pause, resume and end a workout
  • The app, Lock Screen and Dynamic Island always show the same time

Logbook & exercises

One tap after your workout – and it’s all logged.

The logbook takes over date, duration and sets from the timer. Enter weight and reps – NextSet suggests last time’s values, and every new set starts from the previous one.

  • 378 exercises with English and German names, muscle groups, equipment and search terms like “RDL” or “OHP”
  • Offline search that ignores spaces and hyphens – “pullup” finds Pull-Up
  • Favorites, recently used and your own exercises with default sets
  • Weight and reps, duration or distance – depending on the exercise, with notes
New logbook entry: date, duration and sets taken over from the timer, barbell bench press with last time’s values.
Exercise search for “bench pr”: six results such as Barbell Bench Press, Dumbbell Bench Press and Close-Grip Bench Press.

Progress & muscle map

See yourself getting stronger.

The overview shows your week, your streak and new personal records. Charts follow your strength per exercise, volume, training frequency and duration – from one week to a year. The body map shows which muscles you’ve trained.

  • Personal records per exercise, such as the estimated 1RM (Epley)
  • Periods W, M, 3M, 6M and Y – tap a point for its exact value
  • Muscle map front and back: the more sets, the stronger the color – including “Not Trained Lately”
  • History as a list or calendar, searchable and filterable by muscle group and period
Muscle map from the front and back with the chest selected: 10 sets, volume and exercises from the last 7 days.
Progress over three months: estimated 1RM for the barbell bench press with personal records marked, and training volume per week.

Apple Watch

Your workout on your wrist.

Start, pause and end your workout on Apple Watch. Your watch taps you when a set or a rest begins, logs every set with weight and reps and measures your heart rate – live on your iPhone too.

  • “Set Done” with one big button – or with a double tap
  • Adjust values with the Digital Crown, pick exercises from the full database
  • Works without your iPhone nearby – everything syncs automatically afterwards
  • Complications and Smart Stack with the countdown and this week’s workouts

How NextSet works

Four steps. Nothing to learn.

From the first start to your progress in the logbook – this is what a workout with NextSet looks like.

  1. NextSet start screen: rest 3:00 and set 0:45, the ring shows “Ready – Starts with Training”, large start button.

    Step 1: Set your times

Tap “Rest” and “Set” and choose a duration – for example 3:00 rest and 0:45 per set. NextSet remembers them.

  2. NextSet timer during a set: green ring, countdown 0:27, set 3, heart rate 128 bpm, with the controls and the music player below.

    Step 2: Start your workout

One tap on Start is all it takes. NextSet switches automatically, announces every phase and counts your sets.

  3. Summary after a workout: 16 sets, 52:18 active time and the “Save to Logbook” button.

Step 3: Save to the logbook

After your workout, the logbook takes over date, duration and sets. You add weight and reps in seconds.

  4. Logbook overview: 4 workouts this week, 13 weeks in a row, volume, sets, training time and records, with the trained muscles below.

    Step 4: See your progress

Week, streak, personal records and the muscle map show what you’ve achieved – and what’s next.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is NextSet?

NextSet is an interval timer for strength training with a workout log. The app switches between sets and rest automatically, announces every phase, counts your sets and saves your workouts with exercises, weights and reps. From that come personal records, charts and a muscle map.

Which devices does NextSet run on?

On iPhone (iOS 26 or later) and iPad (iPadOS 26 or later). The app for Apple Watch (watchOS 26 or later) is included and optional – NextSet works without a watch, too.

Is NextSet on the App Store yet?

Not yet. As soon as NextSet is on the App Store, you’ll find the direct link here. Until then, you can try the app in the interactive demo on this page.

Do I need an account?

No. NextSet has no account of its own and no server of its own. If you use iCloud, your logbook syncs between iPhone and iPad through your private iCloud – otherwise everything stays on your device.

Does NextSet work without the internet?

Yes. The timer, announcements, logbook and search across all 378 exercises work completely offline. Changes made without a connection sync automatically as soon as you’re back online.

Do I hear the announcements when my iPhone is locked?

Yes. When NextSet is connected to Apple Health, the app stays active during your workout and speaks every announcement itself. Without that connection, time-sensitive notifications take over the announcements – Silent Mode or a Focus can mute them. Alternatively, “Keep Screen On” keeps NextSet in the foreground.

Can I listen to music – even with Spotify?

Yes. During an announcement your music only gets quieter for a moment; it never stops. You control Apple Music right below the timer. Other apps like Spotify keep playing as usual; you control them with your headphones or Control Center.

Are there training plans?

NextSet doesn’t have its own training plans. But you can repeat an earlier workout (for example from the widget): the timer and exercises are taken over, and last time’s values are ready when you log. Your own exercises store default sets that are suggested the first time you log them.

How does the Apple Health connection work?

The connection is off by default and can be turned on in Settings under Integrations. NextSet then saves finished workouts in Apple Health as strength training and shows heart rate, active energy and body weight from Health in your logbook. Every workout ends up in Health only once – even when you train with Apple Watch.

Does NextSet replace medical advice?

No. NextSet is a tool for timing and recording your training – not a medical device and no substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Values such as heart rate, active energy or the estimated one-rep max (1RM) come from your entries or your devices and may be inaccurate. Train within your limits, ask a doctor beforehand if you have health concerns – you use the app at your own risk.

Which languages does NextSet support?

German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. The announcements also come in the language and voice of your choice.

What happens to my data?

Your training data stays on your devices and – if turned on – in your private iCloud, where it’s stored encrypted. NextSet contains no ads, no analytics tools and no trackers. You’ll find the details in the privacy policy.

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

Right in the app under Settings › “Report a Bug” or “Suggest a Feature” – this opens a prepared email. Or write to info@getnextset.app.
